Bhajans are spiritual songs. Chanting Bhajans is a main part of Bhakti Yoga, where we express our love for the divine. The result usually is a deep feeling of joy and unity. Bhajans are also especially suited for group singing.
The Leela Bhajan Jam Band is an ever-changing group of people that like to make spiritual music together, in a loose and playful fashion. The group does not have any fixed members (not even myself), but can gather anywhere anytime to sing bhajans together. The objective is not make a performance but rather provide the people present the possibility to join the singing. Guided by whichever instruments are available (guitars, flutes, drums,...), the simple Sanskrit song texts are projected on a screen so everybody can fully enjoy and participate in the Bhajans. It does not always sound perfect, but hey who needs perfect ?

GAYATRI MANTRA
Gayatri is a goddess as well as a mantra.
As a goddess she is the spouse of Brahma, the creator, so she is another form of Saraswati. She is sister to the sungod Surya and loved his radiance so much that she chose to dissolve herself in him and become the Gayatri mantra. She is dedicated to him, who is a symbol of consciousness and creation. As the mantra, she speaks to him. In her hands she holds symbols of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, as she is above all 3 paths that they represent. Gayatri is zowel een godin als een mantra.
As a mantra she is regarded as the most holy of all vedic mantras. She is considered older that the vedas (the oldest holy scriptures of Hinduism) and even as the mother of the vedas. Alle knowledge of the vedas can be found inside of it. The mantra consists of 24 sound syllables that activate the main energy centers of the body.

As the destination is the same for all, it is easy to make the error of assuming that the path must be just as universal.
