In a variety of ways people can have experiences of spiritual influence that really rock their beliefs. Maybe the experience was pleasant or maybe it was unpleasant. Maybe it was during some ritual, in deeper meditation or through a healing. Whichever way it happened, it brought clear proof that the spiritual world is real and that it is very much connected to our world. The following text was written mostly to help some of my healing clients in dealing with this new outlook on reality.
To the many that never had such experience, spiritual beings are just an idea in which they believe or not. To those with the experience, the spiritual world became a fact of life, which suddenly appears truly magical. On the easy side, the discovery brings with it the glorious realization of the related fact of life before and after death. As our eternal nature is thus realized, desires lose their urgency as time no longer counts, which may bring deep inner peace. More difficult to handle however sometimes is the understanding that the spiritual world may affect our feelings, thoughts, body and soul - both in an agreeable way, as in a less agreeable way. We may feel that the privacy of our own being is invaded.
Basically, as excitement over the discovery meets the blank stares of non-believers, people usually need some time to bring this new understanding into the correct perspective. Some will become overly dependent on the search for positive spiritual energy around them. Others may fearfully try to become super alert in detecting energies in the environment that might harm them. In both cases, the following 6 basic rules of working with the spiritual world may be ignored and bring imbalance. They originate with my training and experience as a healer, having to deal with unhealthy spiritual energies on a daily basis.
Rule n°1 : The entire universe affects your feelings, thoughts, body and soul – get over it & stop identifying.
Food, drink, color, music, facial expression, temperature, some comments, the daily news… even western science fully accepts their huge impact through the neurotransmitters on our mind. So now the new spiritual experience adds to that picture also some influence from the common mindfield of the spiritual world, which comes in many forms. There are energetic interactions with those to whom we are bound emotionally, there are karmic forces that tickle our subconscious knots, there are natural elemental forces that are usually very purifying and there are spiritual beings that might be attracted to and support our energetic frequency, whether it be low or high. All that is there and more, but the first and foremost conclusion for both a stress-causing, vata stimulating onion soup, as for any kind of perceived “spirit attack”, is that we decide. As we now know that the thoughts and feelings that come are only partially “ours”, we have to decide to go along with them or not. The fact that they have come is no proof of their truth or worthiness. We decide and it is usually wise to choose those thoughts & feelings that make us feel good, except if we believe that choosing to face some darkness might bring some new light to the surface. Maybe sometimes we cannot avoid onion soup, nor some unpleasant spirit influence, in which case only what is felt in our heart is our defense, our answer, our freedom. Knowing whether the onion soup or some spirit caused us to think something useless, is not even needed to make that choice. The thought is useless, so forget about it. Even all by itself, mind’s normal random associating can bring up useless thoughts aplenty, without any need for us to identify with them.
Rule n°2 : For those frantically trying to avoid negative spiritual influence, the more you are focused on it, the more it will focus on you.
To become overly careful is in fact very careless. Spiritual connections are energetic cords that are fed by the concentration of emotional energies in attention. So the more intense our attention, the more strong these nadis become and they can be used in both directions. If we can ignore any new unpleasant symptoms they often disappear all by themselves after a while, exhausting their energy in a one-directional exchange. Disregard of this rule means that we are facilitating that which we fear to attract. Fear thus makes us spiritually weak, as the self-fulfilling prophecy that it is. So when meeting people, places or energies, it is advisable to turn towards the positive and largely ignore the negative. Too much searching for the darkness behind a person’s eyes may bring it out, being perceived as a wordless accusation. Turning towards the positive naturally brings it out, being perceived as a wordless encouragement. You decide, you chose. It is usually wise to chose the direction that feels good, except if we believe that choosing to face some darkness might bring some new light to the surface, this time maybe outside of us. The latter is the path of the healer, yes, but qualified healers are rare and healing should always be invited by the receiver.
Rule n°3 : Your best asset in protecting yourself against unpleasant energies is you.
Your strength, your confidence, your faith, your heart feeling,… that is what it comes down to. All other protective measures are just tricks with limited impact, wise to use for sure, yet totally inferior to keeping centered, assured, fearless. For example, we can avoid people with rather negative energy or keep two armlengths distance at least. Feel free to avoid hugs or handshakes with strangers. We can also avoid foods, intoxicants and habits that may numb our alertness. Remember that also in this respect an idle mind is the devil's workshop, so even if you don’t have work to do, keep purposefully busy. It is advisable to create, defend and use our own sacred space, in which we can peacefully develop our inner strength without outer disturbances. Regularly use sacred objects, incense, ash, fire, water, light, mantra, ritual, purification, asana, breathing,... They all work to some extend and in as far as these practices can be integrated in our daily habits these are healthy complementary techniques. Offer all these actions to the positive energies, avoiding attention on the negative energies, strengthening our spiritual public relations. For example if we put sacred ash on our third eye or recite a mantra inside to protect ourselves, it is the devotional offering of the ash or the mantra that will bring the real protection. So the very idea of protection should be forgotten in the process, because protection is something for you, while offering is something beyond you and that is what works.
Rule n° 4 : Your best asset in attracting uplifting energies is your uplifting energy.
Sometimes people start depending too much on the boons that one indeed may get from the spiritual world. For sure, performing certain rituals, doing some sadhana, focusing our love towards the divine may bring tremendous help on the spiritual path. Yet if we are still too “heavy”, there is no pulling us up. Expressing love towards the divine should be followed by manifesting the divine in life. That is where the help can be gotten. If we allow it by asking for it through our prayers, we will be supported in doing the right thing. Doing the right thing sometimes may come down to a very mundane need, yet usually the mundane needs to work through the mundane. Doing the right thing comes as in helping others, in sharing, in letting go of our fears, in being constructive and inspiring. We need to become – in our own limited way maybe ok – the divine energy that we worship, what else does our love mean ? Again, the daily habit of honoring the divine and accepting its grace is totally advisable. Seeing the divine at work 24 hours a day is a blessing in itself, yet calling on the divine 24 hours a day is not the way of things. Connecting heaven and earth requires both branches and roots. We do our natural work, we expect nothing, we embrace everything, that is the divine way.
Rule n° 5 : Trouble can only come your way, if it already lives inside of you.
It is all about energies attracting energies. If there is not a pinch of anger inside of us, no outer influence whatsoever can make us angry. This is how karma works, bringing the triggers that tickle whatever energetic knot is present in our subconscious mind. Complaining is thus beside the point. And if some outer trouble cannot be avoided, the only freedom we have is to work on letting go of the related inner trouble, attachment, desire, blockage. The habit of working on yourself softens this touch of karma, with the spiritual world bringing help rather than obstruction or confusion.   Accept whatever cannot be avoided naturally as part of a process which is essentially purifying and avoid taking it personal. That which may require purification is not you - it is just some oversized luggage.
Rule n°6 : For those that feel particularly sensitive, practice, practice, practice…
Even though some people just have too much fantasy, my experience in healing confirms that some people are overly sensitive to the spiritual world and the emotional energies of others. A variety of factors may contribute to it, and in some cases healing is a requirement that may remove this sensitivity altogether. For some people though, regular healing is the only option to make the symptoms and related blockages bearable, until they have learned what needs to be learned. This learning happens quite naturally, as they resist fluctuating emotions, persistent negative thoughts, chronic pain or other problems in the body. Conscious practice however will speed up the process, compared to the usual slow erratic struggle which does not create the ideal learning environment. Practice means to regularly exercise whatever works for you to bring the kind of centered calmness that is key to your spiritual power and protection. And however sensitive you are, the other rules still apply and n°2 especially.
So, no panic, no manic, relax. Rock & roll your own drum. We now know something which most people do not and we can definitely use the knowledge to our advantage. We may even help others with this knowledge if they will let us. Respect these rules, trust the divine inside and out, enjoy our timeless freedom to chose direction in every moment. Nothing really happens. The wise & honest spiritual teacher will not use fear of the dark to draw people to the light. Trusting, loving and manifesting the light is their best protection, while fear empowers the dark. Only a weak light has to fear the dark. Against the light itself, the dark is powerless. Feed your light, exercise its power inside of you, ignore all else.
Leela is the ancient vedic name for the theater of life. Life in all its forms is an illusion behind which we can find the ultimate truth of pure Being. Yet life is also a divine theater, a spiritual game played by us, the actors. Yoga allows us to hold on to the bliss of truth while playing the game. And also this yoga is a game, which we can only take seriously if we do not take ourselves and this game too seriously. That is the meaning of Leela Yoga, nothing more, nothing less. So, Leela Yoga is a vision on yoga and also a name for a simple organisation that allows me to bring this vision into practice... more about Leela Yoga & Peter Marchand

As the destination is the same for all, it is easy to make the error of assuming that the path must be just as universal.
The attachment that happens in the pursuit of happiness is the main source of unhappiness.
Don't think of going somewhere, because this somewhere will come along with you wherever you go, as you are already there.
Yoga requires unity between enjoyment and suffering, between bhoga and yoga, even between attachment and detachment.
How can anyone be "good" without a choice between good and bad?
While the mind creates the illusion of the universe through the senses, the intellect creates the illusion of understanding it.
When our day has been entirely ego-centered, then our meditation will probably have similar poor quality.
When the focus on the self is held strongly enough, the flow of kundalini energy happens on its own, naturally.
Tiptoe inside, don't make a sound, don't scare away that which cannot be found.
Enlightenment is nothing more or less than the final level of the game of life.
